Crypto Million Dollar Scam: The Story of Erik Bergman Scammed by Fake MrBeast
Erik Bergman, known as the co-founder of Catena Media, publicly stated that he fell for the trick of scammers, eventually losing $1.25 million. The starting point for the drama was his participation in the Team Water charity event, which is curated by the famous bloggers MrBeast (Jimmy Donaldson) and Marc Robert.
The initiative is aimed at the construction of water wells in African countries. Bergman, after a personal conversation with the real Donaldson and Robert, made a large donation of $1 million, which MrBeast even mentioned on his social networks.
The mechanism of sophisticated deception
The story of the deception began just a week after his generous contribution. Bergman received a message allegedly from the organizers of Team Water with an invitation to a closed WhatsApp group for "main philanthropists." In this chat, digital twins of famous bloggers, billionaires, and streamers were created, creating the illusion of an elite club.
Among the participants in the chat were fake accounts of MrBeast, Marc Robert, and other influential personalities from the world of gaming and cryptocurrencies. To build trust, the scammers promised the group members an exclusive trip to Africa, including visits to wells under construction and safaris.
Financial injections into the void
A few days later, a "unique offer" appeared in this group – a chance to invest in a "new cryptocurrency" allegedly launched jointly by MrBeast and the crypto exchange Coinbase. According to the invented legend, MrBeast entered into a partnership agreement with the exchange and, as a gesture of goodwill, offered to participate in the presale of his token to those who contributed more than $1 million to the Team Water fund.
Succumbing to collective enthusiasm and pressure from fake celebrities in the chat, Bergman made two cryptocurrency transfers: first for $500 thousand, and then for another $750 thousand. In total, he sent $1.25 million to the fraudsters.
Epiphany and exposure
The first doubts crept into the entrepreneur's soul only three days later, when he was preparing for the next transfer. His attention was drawn to inconsistencies in the contact details of the chat participants. Bergman noticed that the profile, signed with the name of the popular American streamer Edin Ross (with an audience of 4.5 million on YouTube), had a British phone number.
Later, the victim admitted that the alarm bell should have sounded much earlier - at the moment when the organizers of the "presale" began to insistently demand an immediate solution, stressing the exclusivity and complete confidentiality of the offer. Things finally fell into place after a direct call to the real MrBeast, who confirmed that the chat and the entire offer were a cleverly orchestrated fake.
Entrepreneur's reaction
Bergman decided not to remain silent and published a detailed story about what happened on social networks. He called the incident a "cleverly orchestrated scheme" and honestly admitted that his vulnerability was related to the desire to "be part of a circle of famous people."
The entrepreneur shared that he feels deep shame for his gullibility and with great difficulty found the strength to tell his family about what happened. Despite the colossal financial losses, Bergman stressed that he was not disappointed in charity and continues to support the real initiatives of MrBeast and Robert.
Using someone else's name in fraud
This story is just one example of how the name MrBeast is being used for fraudulent purposes. A month earlier, it became known about the emergence of fake online casinos that completely copied the design and functionality of legal platforms. These fraudulent projects were actively promoted through fake advertising campaigns involving media personalities. One of these sites was positioned as the official casino from MrBeast, luring users by accepting their deposits and subsequently blocking accounts.

celese Haha, classic! First they screwed over the players, then the license turned out to be fake, and now they’re trying to undo everything. A total circus. Yeah, everything will just get bought. They’ll pay whoever they need in Curaçao and get a new license. Money rules everything, especially in this industry.
